Yeah, that would be pretty weird if giovanni was the father. Then again, deliah did date him way in the past so it is possible. Maybe they stopped dating before he found out she was pregnant, and deliah only knew him while he was a trainer, not the leader of team rocket. The writer for the anime did say once that ash's father "was still on his journey to become a pokemon master." Or become a master of all pokemon.

(wait, oak is one of the canidates?!?! That's messed up! That would make ash gary's uncle, not to mention make that one movie where he meets 'sammy' oak very Back to the Future-ish.)

One of the best online series I've ever seen.

Giovanni and Delia were only supposed to have dated during Pokemon Live, (which has an entirely different canon altogether) but Delia even stated that they broke up when she met "Ash's father".

In the anime though, I'd say the best candidate would probably be Silver. It's obvious that Oak likes Delia now, and seems to be courting her. I don't think they would behave the way they always have if they had that kind of history together, plus I think Ash's father was mentioned in the very first episode when Ash was initially leaving Pallet Town.

In Pokemon Chronicles, when Ritchie meets Silver, who is working towards battling Moltres, Silver seems to know of Ash when Ritchie speaks of him, though I don't recall what was said. I'll have to look that up.

Okay. I took a look at that episode. So lets put the anime and manga, altogether to figure out Ash's family. Ash, or Red, barely(if at all) knows his father, who is apparently a pokemon trainer and still on a journey as trainer. Silver is the most likely candidate for being related to ash, for many reasons in the manga and anime, no to mention his sight of moltres reflects ash's encounter with ho-oh. Silver is secretly Giovanni's son, but they got separated when silver was 2 so neither of them know about it(until much later in the manga).

So giovanni is most likely ash's grandpa.(the confusing part is that silver is also somewhat younger in the manga so some people think that giovanni really is ash's father and that ash is silver's half-brother) argh! sooo confusing.

lol. i'm not really familiar with the manga. but in the anime silver looks OOOOOLD. haha.

i had always fantasized that somewhere along the line they would pull a "fullmetal alchemist" and ash's father would show up later and ash would hate him for abandoning himself and Delia.

but really I've just always assumed his dad was dead
